EU to strengthen the regulation on CO2 emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles.
The EU Council has reached an agreement (‘general approach’) on a proposal to update and strengthen the regulation on CO2 emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles. The aim of the proposal is to further reduce CO₂ emissions in the road transport sector and to introduce new targets for 2030, 2035 and 2040. The new rules will contribute to the EU achieving its ambitions to fight climate change and the proposed agreement introduces, among others, a 100% zero-emission target for urban buses by 2035, while setting an intermediate target of 85% for this category by 2030.
Berge Bulk Launches Cargo Ship Using Wind-Assisted Propulsion to Cut Emissions
Dry bulk ship owner Berge Bulk announced the launch of its 210,000 Metric Tons Deadweight vessel, Berge Olympus, retrofitted with four BARTech WindWings by Yara Marine Technologies, that use wind power to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. According to the companies, the new installation will enable fuel savings of 6 tonnes per day, on an average worldwide route, as well as a CO2 emissions reduction of approximately 19.5 tonnes per day. The retrofit also establishes the Berge Olympus as the world’s most powerful sailing cargo ship.
OceanX Partners with IOC/UNESCO to Implement UN Ocean Decade Goals
Global ocean exploration nonprofit organization OceanX has signed a letter of cooperation with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC/UNESCO) in an effort to support and encourage the implementation of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). Launched in 2021 and spearheaded by IOC/UNESCO, the Ocean Decade is a convening framework for a range of stakeholders to identify, generate, and use science research and solutions to sustainably manage marine ecosystems and connect people to the world’s ocean.
DHL Signs Deal for 668 Million Liters of Sustainable Aviation Fuel
DHL Express announced today a new long-term agreement with clean energy and renewable fuels provider World Energy for the purchase of circa 668 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) via sustainable aviation fuel certificates (SAFc). John Pearson, CEO DHL Express said: “DHL Express is firmly dedicated to pioneering a sustainable future in aviation logistics. By partnering with World Energy and confirming this milestone agreement, we are taking another concrete leap towards minimizing our carbon footprint and contributing to a more sustainable future. We want to inspire more suppliers to accelerate industry-wide production and adoption of SAF”.
